Music by Alexei Rybnikov
Music, drawings, sketches. It’s hard to imagine a more creative childhood atmosphere. Father is a violinist, mother is an artist. Alexei Rybnikov even expressed his childhood impressions of watched films in a musical language. The first compositions are the fantasy “The Thief of Baghdad”, the ballet “Puss in Boots”, piano pieces.
“I was not going to be a composer and my mother said that I would be the master of musical theater. Well, maybe not a host, but that I will have my own musical theater. I made my first theater in the basement of the house where I lived, and it was all very similar to the Pinocchio fairy tale: the descent to the basement and the theater itself. I feel the victorious Pinocchio, who has his own theater. ”
Alexey’s talent for his parents was beyond doubt. It remains only to choose a music school. The exam is held in two at once – the Central Music School at the Conservatory and the Gnesins School. Chose the first. His father, a violinist who worked in the orchestra of Alexander Tsfasman, introduced his son to Aram Khachaturian himself. And at the conservatory, the budding composer continued to study with his eminent mentor, and after seven years already taught himself. But the theory for a young musician was quickly replaced by practice — symphonic compositions and music for cinema. Composer debut – short film “Lelka” in 1966. The first experience was so successful that the number of Alexey Rybnikov’s musical themes written for films exceeded one hundred. Directors addressed so often that the composer started a “chest with musical themes.”
“When one of the directors comes, I’m in the chest and show what I already have. If you reveal secrets, then in general I compose all music for myself. ”
“Treasure Island”, “Great Space Travel”, “About Little Red Riding Hood. The continuation of the old tale, “You never dreamed of”, “The very Munchhausen” and dozens and dozens of paintings whose music lived off-screen – with their own lives. The album “The Star and the Death of Joaquin Mureta” became the real star of the charts of the best records. Rybnikov has already met with the director Mark Zakharov on the set of “That Munchausen himself.” Teamwork in the theater had the effect of a bombshell. So on the Soviet dramatic scene, a phenomenon hitherto unseen – rock music. The play was not approved eleven times, but the viewer accepted immediately and unconditionally.
“At one time, when I started rock music, I needed some courage to do so openly with what I wanted. To what the soul lies, ”recalls Rybnikov.
The soul lay to the Russian spiritual music, chants, folklore, “urban” romance … At the junction of genres, the composer writes Avos. Poems by Andrei Voznesensky and piercing music by Alexei Rybnikov, staged by Mark Zakharov, has become a real rock opera that has not left the stage of Lenkom for more than thirty years. “Yunonu and Avos” were staged in Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Germany and even South Korea.
The ten-year work of Alexei Rybnikov – “The Liturgy of the Announced,” for the sake of which the composer creates his own theater. Poems of the Old and New Testament, the poets of the Renaissance and the Silver Age, the lines of Russian classics, Mongolian songs … This mystery. To hear, in the nineties, we had to make our way into the small hall of the Rybnikov Theater in just forty seats.
Greek, Hebrew, Latin and Russian and the story of the “Resurrection of the Dead.” The fifth symphony, written in the Old Testament lines, continues the theme of sacred music in the composer’s works. Rybnikov tries to express “the idea of the unity of all living.”
“The very story of the resurrection of the dead is the most important thing that people believe. In that life does not end, that it continues on. This is the brightest, most serious hope of the people, and I wanted to write about this, ”the composer says.
