What is Bodysurfing?

Bodysurfing is the art of riding a wave without the assistance of any buoyant device such as a surfboard or bodyboard. It is the most primal way to experience the energy of the ocean. By streamlining your body and using your own physical power, you become one with the surf.

For beginners, it offers a safe, affordable, and incredibly rewarding entry point into the world of wave riding. No expensive boards, no roof racks—just you and the water.

Essential Gear for Beginners

While you don't need a board, a few key items will significantly improve your experience and safety.

ItemPurposeWhy Beginners Need It
Swim FinsProvides propulsion to catch fast-moving waves.Crucial for getting enough speed to enter the wave face safely.
Fin TethersSecures your fins to your ankles.Prevents losing expensive fins in heavy turbulent water.
Rash GuardProtects skin from sand and sun.Prevents "belly rash" caused by friction against the sand or water surface.
Handplane (Optional)A small plane for your lead hand.Helps lift your torso out of the water to reduce drag.

How to Catch Your First Wave

01

The Observation

Spend 10 minutes watching the waves before entering. Look for where the waves are breaking and identify the "shoulder" (the part that hasn't broken yet). Beginners should start with small, waist-high waves.

02

The Positioning

Wade out to chest-deep water. Stand with your back to the shore, watching the horizon. When you see a wave approaching, turn around and start swimming toward the beach to gain momentum.

03

The Launch

As the wave reaches you, kick hard with your fins. Extend one arm forward (the lead arm) and keep your body as rigid and straight as a plank. Put your head down to increase speed.

04

The Glide

Once you feel the wave's energy take over, look in the direction you want to go. Use your lead arm to steer and keep your chest high to minimize drag. Enjoy the weightless sensation of the glide.

Ocean Safety First

Never swim alone. Always check local weather reports and surf conditions. If in doubt, don't go out. Respect the ocean and other surfers in the lineup.
