Porto's tango home since 2009
PortoTango was founded by two dancers who fell in love with tango in Buenos Aires and refused to accept that Porto deserved only rented hours in multipurpose gyms. They opened a dedicated riverside studio in 2009 — sprung floors, proper sound, and a calendar built around the dance's real culture: technique, practice, and the milonga where it all comes together. Today it is the city's home for authentic Argentine tango, from first steps to performance.
How the school works
Our teaching follows the traditional tango progression, adapted to real lives:
- Beginner cycles: eight-week foundations covering posture, walk, and connection — no partner required, rotations built in, and an honest warning that tango will rearrange your schedule.
- Progressive technique: ongoing classes by level in both roles, because we teach leaders and followers to understand both sides of the embrace.
- Maestro visits: quarterly workshops with teachers from Buenos Aires and the European festival circuit, included or discounted for students.
- Practicas and milongas: weekly social dancing in the studio, with the traditional codes taught rather than assumed — the cabaceo included.
The culture we protect
Tango is a social dance before it is a performance, and we keep the social heart intact: welcoming beginners into the milonga, teaching floorcraft and respect alongside ochos, and keeping the music — from golden-age orchestras to nuevo — curated by people who dance to it. Many of our students came for a course and stayed for the community; several met their partners here, which we consider our best review.
If you are in Porto and curious about the dance that thinks while it feels, come to an open class at PortoTango — where the soul of tango meets the rhythm of the Douro.
